In 1899, U.S. Congressman Willard Vandiver was giving a speech at a naval banquet when he declared, “I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me.” Though no one knows for sure, it is believed that his words were what inspired the “show-me” expression that has been used as the state’s unofficial nickname and even appears on its license plates today.
